Kadek Hobman from Jigsaw Collective plays music ‘just for fun.’ He says his
focus is not on the money, but on the music itself. Here, he chats with Ting Ting.
At first, our meeting was quite embarrassing, and also a little bit funny. To put it simply, we couldn’t distinguish each other and for a while stood back-to-back as we tried to contact each other.
Kadek wore a fashionable hat and a casual t-shirt: maybe this was the first sign about his cool identity. After a short
introduction, I met his mum.
“Mum, this is Ting Ting, I will be having an interview with her about the band’s upcoming show for the Darwin Festival,” he said as he hugged her hello.

Q: What
difficulties did you encounter when Jigsaw Collective was formed in the dry
season, 2004?
A: To be honest, I joined the band in 2008. I can share with you the difficulties
after my joining. The band reformed in 2008, at that time the main
challenge for us was to getting together and rehearsing. Because the people in the
band are always changed and different people have different schedule.
Q: Which other members play in the band?
A: Jack is the
front man in our band, he sings but sometimes he also plays instruments such
as flute, saxophone. Kim plays guitar, Dan plays bass and Locus is the drummer.
I play the keyboard, but I want to change, because [carrying a] piano isn't convenient
for travelling. We usually invite some guest performers to join us, too.
Q: What is the
most important factor when it comes to creating music?
A: I am the writer
in the band. Disappointingly, I am not a good writer. Just like many other
artists, my lyrics focus on love and relationships with girls. When creating the music, as far as I am concerned, inspiration definitely
contributes a lot. We write different songs individually, come into a room to
play and then improvise them.
Q: Jigsaw
Collective has participated in many live shows. Which one is the most memorable
and why?
A: The Wallaby
Creek Music Festival in Queensland. The main reason may lies in the fact that
it was my first live show. I still can remember clearly that we played for
total of five hours that night.
Q: You studied at CDU, too. What was your experience like?
I met different people there and learned in-depth knowledge about music. However, learning instruments is a lifelong task for me. I hope the Jigsaw Collective becomes just as superb as Beatles.
