Meet Ben Graetz from 'Hot Honey Burlesque'

Director/ Performer Ben Graetz
ensures that Hot Brown Honey Burlesque will overheat "even the sauciest of live performance lovers". Hussein Dia finds out why.

It’s 11 o’clock on a hot Darwin day. I'm walking around CDU campus looking for Ben. My phone rings. It's Ben.

“Meet me at the library please,” I say. Ben looks so chilled out, I know him straight away.

Like any other Darwin local, Ben wears a black shirt, shorts and thongs. His body language and the way that he's dressed make me comfortable and ready for the interview.

Miscellaneous Entertainment, Hot Brown Honey Burlesque, are two of Ben's groups... now we will try to get closer to Ben in order to know more about him and his Darwin Festival show.

Q: Tell me about your career and where you did your studies?

A: I am a bit of everything. At the moment I am more of director and producer of work but am a trained actor, I went to a school called The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 1998. It's an acting school in Sydney. I did a three-year course there and graduated with a degree.

Q: I’ve heard you left industry for a while. Is this true?

A: Yup true. After graduating I worked in industry for a while I did a lot of theatre, but I realised that I needed more money so I worked as a flight attendant for seven years and after that I came back to Sydney and I did my graduate diploma in movement direction, it’s like 'physical theatre'. So now am much more of a director and producer, [I create] new work, but I still perform.

Q: What are you performing in at the Darwin Festival this year?

A: We are doing the Hot Brown Honey Burlesque. That is going to be interesting.

Q: Tell me more about Hot Brown Honey Burlesque?

A: It is like a cabaret show with three established artists: Candy B, Busty Beatz and Lisa Fa’alafi from Polytoxic. They’ve created the basis of a burlesque show, which is all about using people with colour
like South Africans, Aboriginals, Islanders. All of them are blended into a strip tease/cabaret show (burlesque).

Q: Do you perform somewhere else, other than the Darwin Festival?

A: I have my own [company], Miscellaneous Entertainment. It is my show. Miscellaneous is my other personality, I did this show for a so many years... I cooperate with another performer called Consentina Bush. We have a show [that goes] around Australia three times a year.

Q: Tell me about your upcoming shows?

A: I have a physical theatre show coming up in November. It’s called “I am man” [and will show} at Brown’s Mart. I am directing that. I also perform at Monsoon’s bar on Thursday nights (ladies night).
